Packaging Corporation of America
Packaging Corporation of America takes an active role in the communities within which we operate. Our facilities are located throughout the United States and are truly an integral part of the community in terms of people, environment and services. It is our intent to be a good corporate citizen by contributing our energies and resources to helping each local community be a better place to live. Our philosophy of giving back to the community is demonstrated through a multitude of initiatives. Most of these are small, localized grass roots initiatives, but when you put them together they represent a true commitment to community outreach.
"...a true commitment to community"
Adopt-a-School program is our way of helping local schools with that little extra in terms of donations and special projects. Whether it's fixing up a playground, donating computer equipment, or taking the time to read to kindergartners, PCA and its employees are there to help. Our plant in Conrad, IA, allows a local group the use of their phones at night to call for pledges for their high school scholarship foundations. This foundation assists every senior from the community high school who goes on to college with money to help for tuition or books. Our Lancaster, PA plant has established a "Youth Contribution Program" for its employees' children or grandchildren to help fund the variety of activities those children are involved in within the community.
Donating corrugated boxes for multiple community initiatives is something that we do throughout PCA. The story that is closest to our hearts is the recent project we worked on with "Carrie's Bears." This organization consists of a group of housewives that makes teddy bears out of blankets used by young patients who passed away while at the local Children's Hospital. These teddy bears are then presented to the family to help with their loss. After the 9/11 bombings at the World Trade Center, they made teddy bears out of the clothing worn by fallen firefighters and donated them to the families who were left behind. Our plant in Salt Lake City, UT supplied the boxes to ship hundreds of teddy bears back to New York.
Our boxes are also used for various other community initiatives like educational programs or collecting and distributing food during the holidays. Interestingly enough, our doublewall boxes are strong enough to be used by the State Police to reinforce targets at the shooting academy.
Another way that our plants and our people contribute is by sponsoring individuals that are active within their communities. The employees at our Los Angeles plant support the efforts of a retired employee, who is very active with different children's organizations, through donations of food, clothing and money. Over the Christmas holidays he was looking for cash donations to purchase a new television and VCR for an organization that works with underprivileged children. Once again our employees came through. We had a big screen TV, VCR and DVD bought, delivered and set-up by our employees. Needless to say, the smiles on the kids faces were more than enough gratitude.
Our employees also contribute their time to help improve their local communities. They are involved in activities such as fund-raisers, walk-a-thons, blood drives, installing playground equipment at local parks, donating toys for the Toys-for-Tots program, cleaning/painting shelters for battered women, and maintaining sections of local highways.
PCA takes pride in its employees and their contributions to their local communities. Our employees truly believe in making a difference, not only at the workplace but also within the communities in which we operate.
