Rayonier
In our timberlands, we practice sustainable forestry to provide a continuous supply of vital raw materials while protecting waterways and providing for fish and wildlife habitat. We plant about 50 million trees every year. The certification of our timberlands and wood procurement practices under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® program confirms our long commitment to environmentally responsible forestry practices.
We work closely with government agencies and environmental organizations to manage and protect special sites such as wood stork rookeries and river buffers. Recently, for example, we worked with The Nature Conservancy and the State of Florida to create the largest contiguous conservation area east of the Mississippi river through the sale of 57,000 acres of timberland known as the Pinhook Swamp in North Florida.
Southeast U.S.
- The company maintains a demonstration forest near Jesup, Georgia, upon which forest management, timber species, stream protection and wildlife management methods are explained to the public.
- Our harvest scheduling process goes beyond logging to assess the impact across the landscape. This often results in the creation of corridors linking key habitats such as bottomland, drains and ponds.
- Such corridors are actively managed and are only harvested once it is known that surrounding stands provide sufficient wildlife cover.

- Pinhook was not the first time the company has worked effectively with conservation organizations. In 1999, we worked closely with the Nature Conservancy and the State of Georgia to establish a 1,220 acre wood stork rookery. For nearly half a century prior to the sale, Rayonier protected nests that help the wood storks thrive.
